Four mobile chicken pens form the centre of the «Winter garden» in amsterdam West. They are a logical continuation of the research into possible urban agriculture solutions that were conducted for the mobile garden launched in 2010.
What makes mobile urban agriculture so interesting is that these multi-use constructions on roadworthy trailers can be placed anywhere in the public space as long as they don’t interfere with traffic and safety regulations. This puts the design of our cities in our own hands without depending on top-down urban planning and longrunning decision procedures.
Mobile urban agriculture provides an opportunity to claim part of public space as private for those with limited living space. Giving ownership of public space to its users is a step towards ensuring the continued engagement of citizens with their cities.
