Project – Prinzessinnengärten

Prinzessinnengärten is the winning project of the smart urban stage Berlin, Matthias Böttger had curated it in the category BE.

Nomadisch Grün opened «Prinzessinnengärten» in the summer of 2009. Using mobile vegetable patches, they transformed a 6,000 m2 wasteland in the centre of Berlin into an organic urban farm. The site also has several beehives, and a café serving food made from the produce grown in the garden.
Alongside its ecological aims, the project intends to offer local residents a new kind of urban space, where they can meet, work and relax together.
It also aims to strengthen community relationships and promote the area’s social and cultural diversity. The garden has become a place of learning, where people can acquire knowledge and skills connected to issues such as organic food production, biodiversity, climate protection, and healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
On the basis of this experience Nomadisch Grün has launched several offshoots of «Prinzessinnengärten» in kindergartens, schools and universities, and in cities like Hamburg and Cologne.
