The third place goes to JAS e.V. for „Stadt der Zukunft“. The organization won a smart fortwo for one year.

The runner up is Lenka Petzold with Hanky Vogue. The textile Designer will also cruise the streets of Cologne with a smart fortwo for one year and receives € 2 000 in addition.

Winner of the smart urban stage Cologne is Daniela Comito with her project “Wasserwerk“. The first prize is endowed with € 10 000 and nominates the project for the smart urban stage Frankfurt, where the winners of all cities will compete for the overall prize in September.

We also brought ten smart fortwo electric drives for test drives and those were pretty much on the go all day long. An impressive 1.600 test drives were taken in Cologne. Test drivers rode all throughout the MediaPark and it´s surroundings, explored Cologne and experienced the mobility of the future live.

The inflate is already packed up in its moving boxes and the fleet of test drive cars are also on their way to the next smart urban stage location. But the pictures of our happy test drivers will stay right here with us!

Senso Unico already has two shops in Cologne and and their handmade Unisex Clothing many fans.  Now the owners and brothers Mika and Lividi turned an old food manufacture into an impressive creative factory, with their team. In detailed handycraft the Senso Unico Team created space for a fabric archive, Studio, Tailor, Showroom, Shoe manufactury, Filmproduction and „creative relaxation“. Rough brick walls, Meat hooks used as hangers, buckets full of old buttons, Walls of yarn, a large wooden table in the open kitchen and a frequently used table tennis all call for a visit. Just like uniform or sailing fabric, exquisit pieces from Paris and Milan are turned into the wearable uniqum. Those who find the rough Vintage Look – a mash up of 40s Streetstyle and detailed Avantgarde – too daring may order tailormade pieces. There´s no limits to the creativity here. Of course the process isn´t cheap, but the concept is definetely also a protest agains cheap fabric and child labour in the mass production. Senso Unicos Theme is: Things that will last forever (and all their pieces have a lifetime warranty) may as well cost a bit more. Visiting this creative factory is – even if your mind isn´t set on shopping – absolutely worth a visit.

Our fantastic curators met in the afternoon to discuss and decide which projects would be named the top three of our Cologne Selction. It was a long and intense meeting, but everyone agreed in the end. Then the ceremony guests arrived and our future minds behind the ten selected projects were excited and ready to find out which of them would be top three of Cologne.

The third place goes to Jugend Architektur Stadt e.V. with their project Stadt der Zukunft. The project plafully constructing urban sketches with children was curated in the category CREATE by Sabine Voggenreiter. Jugend Architektur Stadt e.V. will now be able to drive a smart fortwo for the next year.

Second prize winner is the other project curated in the category CREATE by Sabine Voggenreiter: Lenka Petzolds Hanky Vogue. The young lady behind the project using hankerchiefs to present how everyone can make a difference with their choice of purchases,  will now be able top drive a smart fortwo for a year and also received  2000 € prizemoney.

The Winner of the first prize is Daniela Comito for her project Wasserwerk. Wasserwerk is an architectural project, made from 100% recycable foil, which Comito wants to establish not only as waterworks but also a place to meet for the city folks. The project was selected by Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Pape in the category LIVE and won € 10 000.

After our Awards Ceremony Bodi Bill played a fabulous show and impressed with various costumes, fantastic music and their infectuous enthusiasm. Once the music stopped everyone swooned out to our smart urban stage terrace for great food and discussion before being lured back into the inflate by DJ Oskar Melzers beats that got us all dancing.

It was a great night and party which made not only the winners, but everyone on site wish it would just go on and on!

10 minutes on the train and it feels like you are miles away from the big city. Nothing here reminds us of the busy streets, suburban idyll dominates the scenery. But something seems familiar, don’t I recognise these Shed-roofs from somewhere? Indeed! A model of the Museum Ludwig was built on an old schoolyard in 1979. Flooring, wall cladding and lighting were to be tested, before the space was meant to be demolished.

Luckily artists salvaged the miniature Version of the famous museum and turned it into an alternative Arts pace: The Simultanhalle – Space for Contemporary Art. The exhibitions remain true to the model characteristics of the architectural concept  and show current positions in the spirit of drafts and experiments. The frequently changing board of curators – often young people – experiment with established and yet unknown artists, who mostly design their shows especially for the particular space.

Thus, fascination doesn’t end with the impressive architecture but continues to through the inside. We would definitely be willing to travel much further for the Simultanhalle than 10 minutes. More info on

Bodi Bills songs tell stories, they have beginning, middle and end, they change suddenly and they stay in your ear as well as your mind. The trio from Berlin mashes rock an electronica, quotes, dissects and pieces it all back together. And then there is singer Fabians crystal clear voice that circles around and unites it all. Bodi Bills postpop simply won´t fit any one genre, apart from the one names: „especially brilliant!“. Their third album „What?“ holds true to all their previous one have promised and Bodi Bill reaches new and higher level in our hearts. To those of you who don´t know the three boys from Berlin yet: It´s about time you do get to know them!

This can be anything – the human body and brain, trees and fruits, damp patches on walls and faults in rubber tyres. The use of «MRI» is limited only by the machines’ bulk – they are far from being portable due to the large size of the magnets they contain.

In order to make MRI machines more mobile, Dr. Carel Windt and Dr. Peter Blümler required smaller, lighter magnets. Special tubular magnets have been developed for examining long, thin objects like pipes, trees, arms and legs. These magnets can be easily opened and then closed around an object, much like a blood pressure cuff. Used in conjunction with the rucksack-sized MRI spectrometer, this magnet offers an exciting new way of looking inside plants, but it is equally useful for materials testing and mobile medicine applications. Under these conditions, hot spots of pollution can arise, especially in so-called urban canyons. Prof. Dr. Andreas Wahners idea with «Urban Clean Drive» is to couple a high-resolution air quality forecasting system to constantly updated measurements of traffic density in order to predict the air quality at street level in advance. In the initial phase, the system will be tested and adapted on the basis of measurements taken by the Jülich mobile laboratory as it takes numerous trips around all parts of the city centre. The calculations made by the system can then serve as the basis for urban traffic management measures such as traffic lights and automatic road signs or for controlling navigation systems. The designers and founders of the label “Ko-j Recycling Design“ Sibylle Hansen and Aulia Muhammad design previously designed and manufacture once already manufactured goods. Things whose end had been decided is the source material for their – exclusively handmade -  furniture, mirrors and lampshades. They breathe new life into used banners, old tires or a variety of wrapping materials. Once extravagently produced goods are thus brought to new usage.

Who would have thought old Oil drums could make such beautiful bowls or compfortable stools? „Ko-j  Recycling Design“ demonstrates how the old can become the new and is so simple and ecological it makes us wonder why we didn´t come up with the idea ourselves.

I spoke to some of our guests at the Intro Party:

Christian is 29 and manages a restaurant. He likes Colognes Friesenwall and was most interested in the Project Augmented Gallery, curated by Prof. Dr. Christof Breidenich. He usually walks through Cologne and would like Cologne to have more pedestrian zones.

Anna is 27 and a psychologist. Her favorite spot in Cologne ist he versatile Halle Kalk. Jack in the Box, curated by Klaus Burmeister, is the most interesting project in the smart future minds exhibition in her opinion. She usually bikes through the city, but would like Cologne to eliminate the Lightcues, that always keep the trains from leaving a station.

Lukas is 21 and works in Advertising. He likes Colognes Brüsseler Platz. His favorite Project in the smart future minds exhibition is Coworking Cologne, which was curated by Klaus Burmeister in the category BE. He usually tackles the city by foot, but would propose Colognes public transport to run throughout the night.

Christian is 34 and a web- and Motiondesigner. His favorite spot in Cologne is the athmospheric Ehrenfeld. His favorite Project is smart intelligent drive curated by Dr. Thomas Weber. He either cycles or drives his car through the city and recommends that Cologne improves the traffic system on busy streets.
