Wasserwerk is the winning project from the smart urban stage Cologne, Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Pape had curated it in the category LIVE.
Daniela Comitos «Wasserwerk» brings the idea of energy-self-sufficient architecture on the Rhine to life. Both its symbolic value and sustainability were important considerations in the design of the building. The facility uses rotors in the water to generate electricity from the river, so that it can supply itself and part of its environment with power. Exhibitions on the topic of «Water in the City» additionally reinforce the notion of combining culture and nature conservation. The innovative structure incorporates ETFE foil cushions, which make up its outer shell and are completely recyclable. The facility aims to educate citizens and raise awareness for the vital issues of water and renewable energy, and allows visitors to see for themselves how electricity is generated – a groundbreaking building that doubles as a local producer of environmentally- friendly electricity and a real asset for the city.
The project was attended by Prof. Jochen Siegmund and Prof. Amandus Sattler. Find out more about “Wasserwerk” at www.c-i-a-d.de
